Tire Safety Inspection Checklist: What to Check and How Often

Why Regular Tire Inspections Matter

Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road. Every steering input, braking force, and acceleration demand passes through four small contact patches of rubber. Yet most drivers never inspect their tires until something goes obviously wrong — a flat, a vibration, or a failed state inspection. A quick, systematic inspection every two weeks can catch developing problems before they become dangerous or expensive.

The Monthly Pressure Check

Check all four tire pressures plus the spare (if equipped) at least once a month. Use a quality tire gauge — don't rely solely on your TPMS. Check when the tires are cold, before driving. Compare the reading to the pressure listed on your driver's door jamb placard. Adjust any tire that's more than 2 PSI above or below the specification. Record the pressures so you can spot slow leaks that develop over time.

Spare Tire Pressure

The spare tire is the most neglected tire on any vehicle. Check its pressure during every monthly check. A flat spare is useless in an emergency. If your spare is a compact temporary spare, it may require a different inflation pressure than your regular tires — check the label on the spare itself.

Tread Depth Assessment

Measure tread depth at three points across the width of each tire: inner edge, center, and outer edge. Use a tread depth gauge for the most accurate reading, or the quarter test for a quick check. Any tire below 4/32 of an inch should be scheduled for replacement. Any tire at 2/32 or below must be replaced immediately. Compare measurements across all four tires to detect uneven wear.

Visual Sidewall Inspection

Examine the entire sidewall of each tire for cuts, cracks, bulges, or scuffs. Check both the inner and outer sidewall — you may need to turn the steering wheel to full lock to see the inner sidewall of the front tires, and use a flashlight for the rear tires. Any bulge requires immediate tire replacement. Deep cuts that expose cords also require replacement. Surface cracking (dry rot) warrants monitoring and potentially replacement depending on severity.

Check for Embedded Objects

Look for nails, screws, glass, or other objects embedded in the tread. An embedded object may be maintaining an air seal temporarily but could cause a blowout under stress. Don't remove an embedded object yourself — drive carefully to a tire shop where the tire can be removed and properly inspected from the inside.

Wheel and Valve Stem Check

Inspect the valve stems for cracks, corrosion, or looseness. Rubber valve stems degrade over time and can crack and leak. Check the valve caps — they keep dirt and moisture out of the valve core. Inspect the wheel rims for dents, cracks, or corrosion that could cause air leaks. A bent or cracked rim should be replaced.

Tire Age Verification

Check the DOT date code on each tire to verify its age. Any tire older than six years should be inspected with extra scrutiny. Tires older than ten years should be replaced regardless of their visible condition. Don't forget to check the spare tire's age as well.

Post-Inspection Action Plan

After completing your inspection, address any findings promptly. Schedule alignment checks if you notice uneven wear. Replace tires that are worn, aged, or damaged. Order new tires from Ship.Tires if replacement is needed — our search-by-size tool makes finding the right fit simple and fast. Keeping a log of your inspections helps you track tire health over time and plan replacements before problems develop.
