Year-Round Tire Maintenance Calendar: A Month-by-Month Guide

Why a Maintenance Calendar Works

Most tire problems develop gradually — a slow pressure loss, incremental tread wear, a gradually worsening alignment issue. By the time you notice a problem, damage has already been done and money has already been wasted. A structured maintenance calendar catches issues early, extends tire life by thousands of miles, and keeps you safer on the road. Here's your month-by-month guide to tire care.

January - February: Deep Winter Check

Start the year with a thorough cold-weather inspection. Check tire pressures weekly during the coldest months, as freezing temperatures cause significant pressure drops. Inspect for any damage from holiday travel. Verify that your winter tires (if equipped) still have adequate tread — 5/32 minimum for snow traction. Examine all tires for signs of flat spotting if the vehicle sat idle over the holidays.

February Rotation

If you haven't rotated your tires in the last 5,000 miles, schedule a rotation in February. This is especially important for winter tires, which can develop uneven wear patterns from frequent cold starts and icy road driving.

March - April: Spring Transition

As temperatures warm up, it's time for a comprehensive spring inspection. Check every tire for pothole damage — bulges, cuts, and pressure loss. Measure tread depth at multiple points across each tire and compare your findings to your last measurement. If you're running winter tires, schedule the swap back to all-season or summer tires when average daily temperatures consistently exceed 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Have a four-wheel alignment check after winter, as potholes and frost heaves often knock alignment settings out of spec.

May - June: Pre-Summer Preparation

Check tire pressures as rising temperatures cause pressures to increase. Verify that you're at the cold-inflation specification listed on your door placard. Inspect sidewalls for cracking or dry rot — UV damage accelerates as days get longer and sunnier. Check the DOT date code on each tire and plan to replace any tire approaching six years of age before summer road trip season. Schedule a tire rotation if you're approaching the 5,000-mile mark.

Road Trip Readiness

If you have summer road trips planned, June is the time to evaluate whether your current tires will make it through the season. Tires that are marginal now will only get worse with summer heat and highway miles. Order replacements from Ship.Tires early to avoid the rush.

July - August: Peak Heat Monitoring

This is the highest-risk period for tire failures. Check pressures at least twice a month, always when the tires are cold. Inspect for heat-related damage including surface cracking, bulging, and uneven wear. Reduce highway speeds on extremely hot days when pavement temperatures exceed 130 degrees. Before any long trip, perform a complete visual and pressure inspection.

September - October: Fall Planning

As temperatures begin to cool, start planning your winter tire strategy. Order winter tires while your size is still available — popular sizes sell out as the season approaches. Check your current tires' remaining tread life and determine whether they'll make it through the next season. Schedule a rotation and alignment check. Inspect your spare tire's condition and pressure.

November - December: Winter Preparation and Year-End Review

Install winter tires before the first significant snowfall. Verify pressures on all tires including the spare. Review your maintenance log for the year — how much tread did you use? Did you maintain your rotation schedule? Are any tires due for replacement in the coming months? Use this review to plan your tire budget for the next year. Browse Ship.Tires during holiday sales for competitive pricing on the tires you'll need in the months ahead.

Making the Calendar Work for You

Set reminders on your phone or calendar for monthly pressure checks and biannual rotation and inspection appointments. Keep a simple log — even a note in your phone — of tire pressures, tread depths, and rotation dates. Consistent small efforts throughout the year prevent the big, expensive surprises that come from neglect.
